5 Healthy Tips For Cooking Veggies

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ansaar_Modack]Ansaar Modack

We all remember our moms yelling at us to eat our veggies when we were kids but most kids hate veggies and adults too. However vegetables are an absolutely crucial part of healthy eating and you must consume the correct number of servings daily. You can make this easier by knowing how to choose and cook your vegetables. Here are 5 tips to help you.

Know how to shop: When you go shopping for veggies you need to know what to purchase. How they feel, the color, how they look are crucial if you want the best and freshest produce. How, I hear you ask. Through trial and error, the more you learn about how veggies should look the better you'll become at picking the best. Also try an buy at a produce stand or a farmer's market in your neighborhood. They usually have veggies of high quality.

Skip the salt: Too much salt in our diet is a growing concern and a killer if you are into healthy eating. Adding butter to your veggies is also a no-no.You should look at substitutes for salt and butter such as low-salt broths or bouillon cubes. These are low in fat and calories.

Choose fresh, raw veggies: Fresh vegetables are much better than processed or canned veggies. Granted, eating canned veggies is better than eating no vegetables at all, they are very high in sodium. Also they are cooked so little or no nutrients are left. And they certainly cannot be said to be fresh. How long does it sit on the supermarket shelf and then in your cupboard? With fresh produce your range of choice is much greater and therefore you can cover a much larger variety, which brings us nicely to the next tip.

Eat a wide variety: Everyone has their favorites, mine is cauliflower by the way, But eating the same veggies all the time isn't exactly fun. One way to add some variety is to pick seasonal vegetables throughout the year. Just try a new vegetable now and again. Who knows, you might just find something new to like.

Get a vegetable steamer: Using a steamer, you can cook vegetables to perfection. The main reason though, is that all or much of the nutrients are maintained, so the veggies don't only taste great but are very healthy. So if you serious about healthy eating I suggest investing in a vegetable steamer.

Follow these 5 tips and eating vegetables as part of your healthy eating diet will never be easier. And your mother won't have to yell at you!

Vitamin E could well be the miracle vitamin for senior citizens. As we age the oxygenation of our cells decreases and oxidation increases. The increased oxidation causes the formation of certain substances called free radicals. Free radicals damage normal cell metabolism. Vitamin E is a natural anti-oxidant that prevents the formation of free radicals. Vitamin E also increases the body's resistance to stress as it improves circulation, strengthens the heart, prevents oxidation and increases oxygenation of our tissues and cells. Although vitamin E is available in our foods, most nutritionists believe we do not get enough vitamin E from our diet and recommend a supplement. Our cells are held together by an intercellular element called collagen.

As we age, this element degenerates. However, vitamin C counteracts this deterioration and helps maintain cellular and collagen integrity. Vitamin C also protects against premature cell aging and the various stresses that threaten our health. The capillaries carry oxygen and nutritive substances to all of the cells in our body. When the capillary walls are very permeable, more oxygen can be transported to the cells. Vitamin A increases the permeability of the blood capillaries so vitamin A also helps improve cell oxygenation. Vitamin A is found in green, leafy vegetables, carrots, tomatoes and fish liver oils. The important B vitamin group contains over twenty different vitamins. However, some are more useful in combating the aging process. Vitamin B1 or Thiamine protects the heart and nervous system.

Niacin, another member of the B group, protects us against heart attacks and strokes. Pantothenic acid increases cortisone production and helps our bodies combat infection. Vitamin B15 helps the body tolerate a lowered oxygen supply, important for people who live in an area of air pollution. Polluted air contains carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide makes it difficult for the lungs to absorb oxygen. Vitamin B15 fights the effects of carbon monoxide. Folic acid reduces your risk of developing high blood pressure. It does this by helping the blood vessels to relax and dilate properly. Folic acid also helps to keep our glands working effectively. Lecithin, a fat substance, is the primary component of the brain and nerve tissues. It is also an essential constituent of the endocrine glands. Lecithin has the ability to prevent heart disease caused by atherosclerosis as it destroys the cholesterol deposits in the arteries. Lecithin also contains important vitamins such as E, D, and K, B vitamins choline and inositol, and essential fatty acids.

Another important vitamin is Vitamin P. Vitamin P is not as popular in the United States as the other vitamins mentioned above. However, Vitamin P has been studied extensively in Russia. Vitamin P or rutin is a bioflavonoid, a co-vitamin of ascorbic acid, or vitamin C. When taken together with vitamin C it increases the effects of vitamin C. But by itself, it strengthens the blood capillaries and regulates their permeability. `

It is important to remember however, that before trying any type of supplement, you should check with your health care provider. This is especially true if you are taking any type of medication. Although these supplements may have no side effects when taken alone, problems may arise if they are combined with other medications.

Echinacea is a member of the botanical family asteraceae commonly known as asters. The genus is echinacea and there are several species but only three are used for medicinal purposes. These are: E. purpurea, E. angustifolia, and E. pallida. The species can be distinguished from one another by the color of their flowers. Echinacea was originally used medicinally by the Native American tribes. The Lakotas referred to E. angustifolia as Icahpe hu. They used it to heal snake bits, sepsis and rabies. The Dakotas used echinacea for eye infections and also as veterinary medication for the horses. The Choctows and Cheyennes used it for coughs and colds while the Comanches treated sore throats with Echinacea and the Blackfoots used it for toothaches. Altogether echinacea is known to have been employed as medication by over 14 Native American tribes. It is possible that they used all of the species.

During the 1800's, H.C.F. Meyer made a commercial medicine from E. angustifolia. After learning of this, three physicians, Dr. Lloyd, Dr. John King and Dr. Meyer began to study the healing properties of the plant. The results of their studies led them to recommmend its usage. Ellingwood's 'American Materia Medica' listed it as a treatment for syphilis, typhus, diphtheria, chronic mastitis, and tuberculosis. It became highly popular in the United States and in the early twentieth century was a top selling drug. It remained so until the discovery of antibiotics such as penicillin. Americans discontinued its use when the American Medical Association labeled it worthless in the 1930's. However, people in Europe continued to be enthusiastic about echinacea. This was particularly true in Germany.

During the 1930's, a German physician, Dr. Gerhard Madaus, started to do extensive research on echinacea. He visited the United States to purchase seeds from chinacea Angustifolia which was the species used in medicine at that time. Unknowingly, he returned to Germany with seeds from Echinacea purpurea. He continued his studies and research and finally developed a product known as Echinacin. This is manufactured from the flowers, leaves and stems of the plant and is still available today. Echinacea is available as a tea, capsule or extract. It can also be harvested wild in some states. Other states have listed it as an endangered species. Echinacea is easy to cultivate and thrives in sunny, dry environments. Echinacea boosts the immune system, and helps to prevent colds and flu. The recommended dosage is 300 to 500 mg. taken four to five times daily. While its main popularity has been as an immunity booster and cold fighter it is useful in fighting yeast infections. Echinacea is also available as a cream. And when used topically it provides relief for canker and cold sores. Echinacea is a controversial herbal remedy. Many research studies have been performed. Some have concluded that it has no benefit in boosting immunity or relieving cold symptoms. But studies in England and Europe have opposite results.

Regardless of what scientists say or don't say echinacea is one of the top selling herbs in the United States so it has a high following amongst the general public.

The most important factor that you absolutely must come to understand when it comes to effective workouts and lose weight programs is that fad plans simply do not work. The bottom line is this: If you encounter an ad or "information" pertaining to a workouts lose weight program that sounds too good to be true ... understand that it is too good to be true. The fact is that an effective weight loss workout is not one that will provide to you instant results. Instead, it is going to require work on your part.

The next factor that you must keep in mind when it comes to lose weight programs is that an effective regimen that will help you lose weight and that will ensure that you keep the weight off into the future, is a weight loss system that will consist of three essential elements:

-stretching

-aerobics

-strength training

In order to get your body in the best possible condition (which includes losing unwanted and unhealthy weight and then keeping it off) you need to make sure that you embark on a program that incorporates these three vital elements. Your weight loss and healthy weight maintenance objectives can not be met without a system that utilizes each of these three elements appropriately.

Another factor that you need to keep in mind is that your workout and your exercise must be done regularly. You can not approach losing weight through exercise in a hit and miss manner. If you do approach weight loss (and healthy weight maintenance) in a random and undisciplined manner, you will never meet your goals and objectives.

Finally, yet another factor that you need to understand to lose weight is that exercising is only half of the equation. Along with exercise, you need to initiate and then maintain a healthy diet. The reality is that if you exercise but do not eat right, you will not meet your goals. And if you eat right but do not exercise, you will not meet your goals either. You must do both.

The Relationship Between Food and Migraines By Kurt Naulaerts

Migraines are excruciatingly painful and are one of the most severe cases of headaches. The pain is extreme and immobilizing. They can begin with an aura that includes vision, auditory or olefactory (smell) and a pain that is a dull ache. It will gradually evolve into pounding pain. It can feel as if the pain happens on one side of the head or all over.

The time sequence for a migraine will vary from person to person and sometimes from migraine to migraine. The same can be said about the frequency. Some may have one migraine in their lifetime while others suffer weekly.

Because of the severity of the pain and the disability that it causes in the life of an individual most people search for cures and solutions to take the pain away. One of those options is to change the diet and nutrition that the body receives.

In some instances people can identify triggers for their migraines that are related to sugar or chocolates. Some physicians believe that these migraines are triggered by allergies to those substances. And these people are able to stop the migraines by only taking those substances out of their daily routine.

Taking out sugar, more specifically white sugar, is actually more difficult than it may appear on the surface. There is white sugar in many processed foods from breads, to cookies and packaged foods to all desserts. Suddenly the individual is faced with a complete dietary change.

Others find that by taking processed foods out of their diets, whether because of the white sugar or other chemical additives, their migraines are either greatly reduced or disappear. The theory is that we are actually what we eat, which makes perfect sense. The cells in our bodies are produced by the energy, vitamins and minerals that we take from the food we feed our bodies. If that food is full of chemical additives, white sugar and high in trans fats then the cells and energy they produce are defective.

If eating to help reduce or cure your migraines is a goal of yours then it is time to take it seriously. There are several factors that should be addressed before taking the plunge. The individual should have a basic education on how and what they will eat, how they will accommodate their lifestyle change while eating out and what alternatives might be available.

Migraines can cause a lot of pain. An advanced way to fight pain is via pulsed magnetic therapy. One of the best devices is the MRS 2000.

Natural Cold and Flu Remedies

Natural Cold and Flu Remedies
By Colin Ng Reynolds

Well the cold and flu season is well and truly upon us so we thought we would share a little of our wisom with you and share some of the secrets to a natural remedy for cold and flu. Herbal medicines for cold and flu ailments do not directly attack the viruses. They exist to help boost your immune system, since only your own body can help you fight off these problems. Your immune system is the key to fending off viruses!

Whilst there is no better treatment for cold and flu than prevention we don't often realise this fact until it's too late and reach for the lemsip and night nurse etc but there are natural cures for cold and flu symptoms which dot require you to fill your body with pharmaceutical drugs. The same herbs that keep colds and flu at bay, will also help you get rid of it faster!

The common cold is caused by any one of 200 different viruses. Symptoms range from a sore throat, running nose, nasal congestion, hacking coughs, headaches, and fever. Most colds only last for 7-10 days but it can be a miserable 7-10 days!!

In traditional Chinese medicine, astragalus root is often used to help boost the immune system. Astragalus Root Powder is an immunomodulator. It contains Glycosides, Polysaccharides, Choline, Betaine, Rumatakenin, and Beta-Sitosterol. It activates the immune system, thus enhancing the body's natural ability to fight disease and protecting the body against a number of toxins

One particular herb which has recently had a lot of press coverage is Echinacea. Echinacea has in fact been used by America Indians for hundreds of years. It is native to the North America Plains, but varieties of the species are now found on most continents and has become one of the top selling herbs in the United States. Echinacea activates the body's immune system increasing the chances of fighting off any disease. The most important immune-stimulating components are the large polysaccharides, such as inulin, that increase the production of T-cells and increase other natural killer cell activity

Its anti-bacterial effect makes it a good herb for treating many viral and bacterial infections. Echinacea is also an excellent blood cleanser which helps to sweep dead cells through the channels of the lymphatic system and dispatches white blood cells to fight the infection. So when you feel the cold coming on - reach for the echinacea tincture. As with any of these herbal remedies it is important to try to take echinacea before the full onset of a cold or flu to give the best chance of a swift recovery.

Herbalists have also been using liquorice to soothe chest and throat complaints since the third century BC for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, throat problems, colds and coughs. Liquorice contains anti-viral compounds that induce the release of interferon, the bodies own anti-viral constituents. It is an expectorant and anti-inflammatory which makes it excellent for stubborn coughs and lung infections. (Please note that large doses can act as a laxative!)

Bee pollen is another natural cure for the common cold and flu that we would strongly recommend. As Bee Pollen has the full-spectrum of blood building and rejuvenating properties it is also particularly beneficial for people recuperating from illness and is generally recommended for strengthening the immune system. The nutritional diversity of Bee Pollen makes it an ideal dietary supplement as a complement and boost to a well-rounded diet. The nutrients in Bee Pollen are very concentrated and extremely high quality. This nutritional density means that even small amounts provide effective and valuable levels of important nutrients.
